Friends fight sometimes.

Sabi nga ni Winnie the Pooh kay Piglet, “If there ever comes a day when we can’t be together, keep me in your heart, I’ll stay there forever.” Buti pa si Winnie the Pooh at Piglet di nag-aaway e. (By the way, kung ikaw ang tatanungin sino sa tingin mo kina Pooh at Piglet si Mar at Digong? Please explain your answer and show your solutions)

However, when superheroes fight we all win. Our childhood heroes bashing each other in the head? What’s not to like about that, right? Kaya tayo nanunuod ng WWE nung bata tayo e. But then again as Batman v. Superman already showed us, Hollywood can still get a sure thing wrong.

“Ganda ng mga mata mo, bro.”              “Wag kang ganyan, bro.”

Captain America: Civil War just might be the best movie to come out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There. I said it. Tama yung balanse niya ng fun and seriousness e. I guess you can say that about the previous Captain America movies as well. Mostly I think it’s because of Tony Stark. Robert Downey Jr. is the biggest star in the franchise so naturally ang writing medyo nag-cecenter around him. Too much Tony can be too much sometimes. He’s more serious in this movie and doesn’t hog the screen so much but still gets to deliver a few witty remarks here and there. One of the things I actually liked about the movie was that it was able to juggle the screen time of everyone. Make no mistake, although the title says Captain America this is an Avengers movie. Ang taas naman ng pride mo) For an ensemble cast like this, it’s hard for everyone to have a significant contribution to the story. Of course, the story is still mostly about Captain America and Iron Man since sila ang may conflict dito. And the movie was able to express their conflict beautifully. Alam mong they are very different people with different ideologies pero magkaibigan sila. You see that in the way they interact. Alam mong may inis sila sa isa’t isa pero they respect each other.

Gets ko naman na pinoprotektahan niya yung kaibigan niyang si Bucky but he goes through so much trouble for the guy who’s guilty of so many terrible things. I’m sure while watching or when you watch it mamimili ka ng side e. Pero malamang you’ll lean towards Iron Man’s reasoning. Which is good kasi he’s actually supposed to be the “villain” here but he’s really not. He tends to come off as an asshole in previous films pero this time he’s just trying to do the right thing. Pero yung major fight scene sa gitna ng abandoned airport would rank as probably one of the best scenes to come from a superhero movie. The Civil War comics which this movie was based on had dozens of heroes fighting against each other. Dito siguro meron lang silang 6 sa each side so akala ko magiging underwhelming. Boy was I wrong. As in magkaaway talaga sila. Dito you get the impression na naghaharutan lang sila e. But in the comics, what they were fighting for meant something kasi may casualties e. It really matters which side you choose because the lives of your friends are at stake.

One thing great about Marvel is that they know how to cast their heroes. Paul Rudd as Ant-Man makes an appearance and he’s as funny as you expect him to be. The introduction of Black Panther also feels very organic. This is his first time to appear in a Marvel movie but it doesn’t take long for you to understand and sympathize with him. And then of course we have Spider-Man. Early reviews have been saying that he’s the best thing about Civil War. Well, the rumors are true because he really is. Tom Holland is amazing as Spider-Man because he captures the Peter Parker persona perfectly. (Ulit-ulitin mo nga yang last four words na yan ng mabilis sige nga!) Buti na lang pinahiram ng Sony si Spider-Man sa Marvel because Civil War made us excited about Spider-Man again.

Please don’t ruin Spider-Man by making him emo by the 3rd movie. Tobey Maguire hasn’t recovered since.

Nowadays it seems like everyone’s fighting everyone in the movie business. Batman vs. Superman. Daredevil vs. The Punisher. But I think if you’re gonna do a “versus” movie, Civil War should be the blueprint. Marvel’s approach couldn’t be more different from DC’s. Marvel has been doing this since 2008 with the first Iron Man movie kaya kabisado na nila to e. This is actually the 13th installment to Marvel’s ever growing cinematic universe. So unlike BvS na kailangan madaliin yung kuwento para magkaron na ng Justice League, Marvel already had 5 movies under their belt before they went ahead and made The Avengers. So by then kilala mo na more or less lahat ng mga kailangan kilalanin e. In terms of world-building, lamang na ang Marvel kasi it really feels like the characters are inhabiting a universe of their own. And that universe is recognizable to the audience even if it’s a superhero movie because we’ve been there many times before. And it also helps that the universe Marvel built is something the audience want to be in despite the constant threat of aliens invading. Nobody wants to live in the “Man of Steel” universe. Masyadong malungkot e. People go to see movies like this because they want to be entertained. They want an escape from everyday life because life itself can get too complicated.
